The Texas Travel Industry
Association (TTIA) announced today that Texas Comptroller Susan Combs will
receive the association’s 2010 Silver Spur Award. The Silver Spur is awarded to
public officials who have shown exemplary service to the state and the travel
and tourism industry.
"Comptroller Combs has been a long-time
advocate of travel and tourism issues that have been critical to our industry
and to Texas,” said David Dunham, chair of TTIA’s Legislative Affairs
Committee. "Her leadership in highlighting and championing the fiscal impact of
state tourism has been instrumental in helping Texas maintain its position as a
top domestic and international travel destination. She is always willing to go
the extra mile to work for issues that benefit the state’s economy and quality
of life.”
Tourism is the third largest industry
in Texas. Direct
spending by travelers in the state surpassed $60 billion in 2008 and directly
supported jobs for almost one half million Texans.
"The health of the travel industry is
vitally important to the overall economic health of the state,” said David Teel, TTIA President and CEO. "We’re pleased
to recognize Comptroller Combs with our Silver Spur Award. She clearly values the
positive economic impact tourism provides for our state and our communities.”
TTIA will present its Silver Spur
Award to Comptroller Combs on Tuesday, February 16th at TTIA’s 20th annual
Texas Tourism Unity Dinner in Austin.
The dinner will be held at the downtown Hilton Austin. Approximately 900 people
from across the state are expected to attend, including dozens of elected
officials, state legislators, mayors and city council members.
Previous Silver Spur Award winners
have included: Governor Rick Perry, Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst, former Comptroller
Carole Strayhorn, former House Speaker Pete Laney, State Senators Jeff
Wentworth and Eddie Lucio, and State Representative Lois Kolkhorst.
