Friends of Travel –Give Back – Galveston Island

The Big Reef at the East End Lagoon is a natural, undeveloped area on the far east tip of the island encompassing coastal wetlands, prairie and beachfront.  The area provides habitat for a variety of animals, fish & birds.  Volunteers will assist in a Beach Clean Up that will consist of picking up trash and small pieces of debris from the Big Reef area.  By cleaning up the area, we are protecting these animals, fish, birds and plant life habitat from the risks that trash brings and making it a safer and more enjoyable place for residents and visitors to visit.  Volunteers will also go on a Kayak Educational Tour where you will learn about the wetlands, the human impacts on Galveston Bay, and how to paint watercolor landscapes.  Please be prepared to be physically active as you will be learning how to paddle a kayak on this tour.

Everyone will meet in the lobby of The San Luis Resort or Hilton Galveston Island Resort at 8:00am, and the bus will depart no later than 8:10am to pick up at the San Luis and then pick up at the Hilton.  Lunch will be provided and bottled water will be available throughout the morning.  Volunteers are required to wear water shoes or tennis shoes (old tennis shoes recommended as they will get wet and muddy).  We will provide sunscreen and bug spray.  Items to consider bringing: snacks, hat, and sunglasses.
