As we monitor the current COVID-19 or "Coronavirus" situation, our thoughts and prayers go out to those impacted by this virus to date. We recognize that the ever-changing nature of this current virus is concerning and needs to be addressed in a common sense, informed, and calm manner.
There is no doubt that the media coverage, local/county/state official declarations, closures by education institutions and changes to private business functions as prevention efforts based on COVID-19 progression have had a significant impact to daily life, as well as to the local, state and national economy.
We are seeing the initial waves of economic impact in the Travel Industry as the COVID-19 crisis has already begun to impact destinations, meetings, conventions, and local businesses across the country as event cancellations spread, and demand for air travel has reduced for both business and leisure travel.
Many of our members are feeling a sense of helplessness due to speculation about the level of spread or length of impact, both which remain in question at this time. In times like this many in our industry are left to wonder what if anything can we do to mitigate or control the crisis?
What is within our power is to monitor the situation, share accurate information, measure the impact, support each other, and prepare for the rebound as we recover from this current situation.
Monitoring the situation and measuring the financial impacts of this crisis will help to provide valuable information as the crisis subsides and for years to come. Supporting those within our industry with frequent updates and sharing accurate information or best practices is vital. Finally, and most importantly contingency planning and preparedness to bounce and rebound on the other side of this crisis is critical.
